Love the Game, Not What It Can Bring To You

Be in love with football, not with what football can give you

Jose Mourinho

The Beautiful Game

By no mistake, football is called the beautiful game, and the successful Tottenham Hotspur manager, Jose Mourinho, captures the essence of this in his comments around what makes someone a success.

Nowadays many kids enter the football for all the wrong reasons. The flashy lifestyle of professional players attract their attention but what is missed through the lenses of Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok etc. is the deeply seeded passion players such as Marcus Rashford, Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane has for the game itself.

To arrive at a level these athletes are now at, they had to be consumed by football 24 hours per day 7 days per week and have the passion to sacrifice everything else in their pursuit for excellence in this particular area. One simply cannot do this by being attracted to the perks of becoming a professional player rather than simply loving the game.

There are many other areas that can give you the perks. If you are a singer you can achieve the same benefits of being famous, rich etc. But if you want to succeed in sports, especially, in football at the highest level, you have to be in love with the process of the game itself.

The Ingredients of a Great Player

When asked of what makes a great player, Jose paints a picture of splitting a player into 4 parts – how good he is tactically, technically, physically, and psychologically. Yet, he concludes that although we can be analytical and try to pinpoint to one thing, there isn`t such a thing because a man and a player is a combination of those elements.

“Can you be a good player by being technically amazing but physically not ready and psychologically weak?”

“No, your place is more likely in the street football.”

“If you`re physically amazing but tactically you are blind, go to athletics and run around the track and maybe there you can succeed.”

“For a football player to succeed, they must have everything.”
